Trend Alert: Cardigans and Capes

If you have flipped through a few magazines or scrolled through a few style blogs…you have definitely seen the shift from structured blazers to soft flowing cardigans and capes.  I love a great blazer, as we all know….but it is nice to have such an assortment of oversized cardigans to choose from this fall.   Shopping them for all of you has been SUCH fun and I can’t wait to add a few to my collection.  Which one to choose?  My favorites below!  Happy Shopping:)

TIP:  Don’t toss your blazers ladies!  They are classic, chic and always provide polish and sophistication:)

Goodnight Macaroon has this oh so cozy grey shrug available HERE.  I own something similar from Armani Exchange and I wear it constantly…over everything!

Nordstroms Colorblocked Cape available for purchase HERE  This can literally be worn over anything and everything.  Casually with jeans or even over a cocktail dress!

Loose Easy Style

This may not officially be a kimono…but it is a favorite shirt of mine and definitely has the look and feel of the kimonos I have been loving so much for fall.  I plan to purchase one…after all of my clients have chosen theirs…aren’t I sweet:)  Ha!

Not too much to report other than insanity with work.  I have one more “Roll in the Rack” scheduled for Friday, and then hoping to spend the weekend catching up on internship inquiries, box service inquiries and EMAILS!  Thanks for your patience as this has been my busiest week to date:)  HAPPY THURSDAY!!!

Unlikely Pairing: Grey and Brown

This outfit may have been inspired by my new obsession, the Sam Edelman booties featured below.  I mean GAH!  I actually was shopping for a client when I stumbled upon them….weakness struck and I had to have them for myself!  They are just perfection in every way.  The heel is mommy friendly, the zippers are on trend and modern, and the color was lacking in my shoe wardrobe.

Lightweight layers are key for me right now.  It is still hot as h*ll outside, but my mind is on fall fashion.  Layers allow it to feel like fall, peeling away when its hot and adding on when you step into the air conditioning.  There was a time, I would have NEVER paired grey with chocolate brown.  Grey always went with black accents, not brown.  I am so glad to have left that notion behind.  I love this grey/brown color combo…..simple, casual, chic….the name of my game.

* I am wearing a new wash c/o Level 99.  Its the Liza Skinny.  Looks awesome cuffed, but also left long.  This will be my staple fall dark jean. If you are interested in purchasing or want to request a pair for your The Box Service, let me know.  $149

Inside a Closet Overhaul

Let me preface this post with:

1.  The shots are grainy…they were all taken with my phone.

2.  These are not glamorous shots…just taken for points of reference….not beautifully staged, as this was truly in the midst of a FOUR hour closet overhaul and not recreated for the blog.

If you visit my Services Page, you will note that closet makeovers are often personalized for each experience.  They also range in price, anywhere from $300 to $500.   The main differences in price are based on travel, length of project and whether client wants all NEW wooden hangers.  Most closets fall around $350 to $400.  The one highlighted below was $350, it lasted just under four hours and client lived about 40 minutes away.  It is very common for me to work the “Roll in the Rack” with a “Closet “Makeover”.  I literally roll in a rack of clothing for the client to shop from, once we have finished her closet overhaul.  We mix and match new with the items we allowed back into her closet.  It freshens up the wardrobe instantly.

Now….Lets get started!

STEP 1:  Everything is taken out of the closet and/or wardrobe.  I mean EVERYTHING.  This client has a beautiful 50 year old Tudor style home with no closets.  She had custom wardrobes built.  Cool, no?

*this is the part of the Closet Makeover that most can handle on their own.  I empty everything onto a rolling rack, but you can certainly empty to a bed or even the floor.

Step 2:  I have the client try on absolutely EVERYTHING at this point.  I will make exceptions for things that look great and the client immediately says she loves, but truly we spend over 1 1/2 hours (at least) trying on all the items taken out of the closet.  The idea here is to ONLY PUT BACK THINGS THAT FIT WELL AND LOOK GOOD!

*You need to enlist a professional or a friend/family member.  You simply NEED an objective opinion.  Choose a friend or family member that is into fashion and knows trends.

Step 3:  Piles.  Oh the piles.  I make 2 or 3 depending on the client/circumstance.  Pile one is for items that are going back into the closet.  They made the cut.  I rehang them neatly, buttoned, facing the same direction.  Pile two is for items that need some tweaking but still look good enough that we want to spend the time and alteration $$$ to get them up to par.  Example, pants that are too big, but are nice and timeless…a trip to the tailor for 15 dollars can make them a perfect fit again.  Pile three is donation.  This is always the largest pile.  The point of the closet makeover is to get rid of old, tattered, ill-fitting items.  Often, it is very hard for clients to part with things they hold an emotional connection to.  Of course,  I would never make someone part with their great-grandmothers shrug or anything like that….BUT….if you are holding onto your maternity wear from your last child (who is now three) because you aren’t planning to have more children…well, those clothes need to go.  Usually when I arrive, clients are wearing between 10 to 15 percent of their wardrobe.  Typically a small collection that hovers to the front of the closet.  When I am done, I want the client to wear 100 percent of her wardrobe and feel amazing in each and every piece.

*You also need a friend for this step.  Otherwise it will be you and a sea of clothing.  This part can be overwhelming and surprisingly emotional for many women.  I think this is the part that requires a professionals help, but I may be a bit biased, ha!

Step 4:  Donation Packup.  It isn’t glamorous, that is for sure.  I simply toss all the donated items into bags.  I go through it at home (weeding out items that are just too beat up to donate).  I then take the approved donations to Grace Initiatives, the charity that I currently partner with.  My one suggestion here is to have an idea (and plan) for where to take your donation pile.  When I first started this service, a few years ago, I didn’t remove the donate pile for clients.  Many have shared that slowly items would make it back into their closets and the pile of clothes would sit for months.  I can’t think of anything more annoying than a big pile of old clothes…ok, maybe a big old pile of ironing.  Anyway, as I saw the need, I found a deserving group of less fortunate young women to donate to.

* Look up local charities and find where your clothing best fits.  There are many transitional programs that mentor women getting back into the workforce and your clothing can help boost their confidence exponentially.  There are also great programs for battered women, who need casual everyday clothing.

Step 5:  Back in the closet.  Once we have cleared out donations, everything goes back in the closet.  I try to work this with optimum functionality in mind.  For this particular client I placed casual items to the left (not pictured), work sweaters/shrugs on top, suiting and separates (pant/blazer) on the bottom.  This way, when she got dressed for work she knew to go to the right side of her closet and if it was the weekend she would go to the left.  Hopefully that works for her.  Clients can always move things around once they get their flow, but every.single.item. in that closet fits, looks good and is wearable for their life.

* Note I always keep the garment and care of it in mind.  Some sweaters are folded because I feared they would stretch specifically through the shoulder area if they were hung.  Pay attention to the best way to store your clothes.  It will have them looking better longer, I promise!

Step 6:  Outfit Creation.  This is the fun part for me.  For those that JUST book a closet, I will create 8 to 10 head to toe looks with items you own.  I will try to focus on what you do most…so if you work, I will create work-day looks.  If you are mom on the go, I will create those.   I will use your accessories, shoes etc.  I take photos and email them to you the next day as well as providing you a list of “essentials” I feel you are missing.  For example, you don’t have a great blazer to polish off your t-shirt and jeans looks.  Or maybe you could benefit from adding a particular color into your wardrobe.  I will email links and suggestions of where to buy those items.

I will mix in what you already have and freshen it up with items I brought for you to purchase.  The outfit pictured below.  The tank and skirt were already owned by the client.  The denim jacket, necklace and shoes were brought by me and the client purchased.  Once she decided to purchase them, I mixed this outfit together making an incredible head to toe look for summer!  I take photos (some on the floor/bed like shown) and some ON the client.  All are emailed for clients reference the day after.

I hope that helps some of you see into the world of Closet Makeovers.  I am sure there are a million different ways you COULD do this…but this recipe seems to work well for me and my clients.  If you have any questions or want more details, I am HAPPY to answer. Just leave the question below in the comments section and I will answer back there asap!  Thanks for reading and HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!!!!  Back Monday with a fun new Monday Mingle!!

Easy Shorts for Summer!

A friend and reader asked for suggestions on looser fitting shorts for the coming HOT summer months.  She resides in my home state of Virginia, so instead of suggesting harder to find boutique brands (like I usually do) I popped by my favorite affordable online retailers.  In doing so, I stumbled upon these badboys from Old Navy.  Snatching them up for myself today- with a $15 price tag, I will most likely grab both colors.   In true TSF fashion, I can’t just send a link…I have to style them for you too!  So here you go Ann….hope they work for you!

#Monday Mingle: All Dressed Up

This past Saturday my husband and I attended The Beauty Ball hosted by an amazing organization The Beauty Foundation for Cancer Care  at Trump in Colts Neck, New Jersey.  Dear friends of ours are members and they invited us to join in the evening- raising money and awareness for the families suffering from Cancer.  This hits close to home as my father is a cancer survivor and although he is in remission and the best “pop” around…it was definitely something that shook our family to the core.

I purchased this dress a while back…actually I purchased it for a client at the request of her husband and wrapped it up with some other items for her birthday gift.  I fell in love with the mixture of classy/sexy that the dress exudes and snatched one up for myself.  Here it is in all its glory for #MondayMingle, the style collaboration between myself, BonBon Rose Girls and Momtrends.  The linkup is being hosted by Kristin today so pop by and JOIN IN.   Also, don’t forget to enter the awesome giveaway ends this week!

I am in Philadelphia all day today…training and some inspirational talk from the creator of Stella & Dot.  Follow along on Instagram for fun pics and pretty baubles!  Happy Monday!

Crappy Photo Disclaimer:  Sorry for the not so great photos below…I really try to enjoy the events I attend and be in the moment.  There was no time for a pre-party photo session and all pics were taken on my phone.

NYC: Black, Yellow and a little Sparkle

On Monday, I put my big girl pants (fair enough, tights) on and braved the cold into the great city of New York.  I had a few blogging friends I was dying to see…..Glamamom, BonBon Rose Girls and Momtrends.  We met at the delicious Rosa Mexicano across from the Lincoln Center…shared fabulous conversation and unbelievable guacamole….then head over to take a few outfit shots, of course!  I was supposed to head to the Alice and Olivia presentation…but a few too many margaritas had me ditch it and just take the train home.  If you break it down, my fashion week experience involved very little fashion at all…and as Andy Grammer would say…”that’s Fine by Me”!

I first wore yellow and black together here and then here and have been smitten ever since.  I really adore ANY bright colored blazer and would completely recommend one for Spring.  It can completely transform your basic black clothing for transitional weather (like now) and be styled well into the spring and summer months.  Hope you find some outfit inspiration and have an awesome weekend!!

Easy Glamour

We just experienced a freaking blizzard here at the shore (ok, I am exaggerating slightly)…but we got over ten inches and it is close to zero outside…so I am calling it a blizzard.  Thankfully I took these photos on Monday…I had an afternoon appointment with a boutique and then went to meet a friend for dinner.   My style has been all over the map lately preppy, simple, bohemian…one common denominator is easy.  You won’t see complicated layers, ridiculous amounts of accessories or hard to wear pieces…life is so complicated most days…getting dressed shouldn’t be.

Definitely a go-to look for me….White tee, blazer and skinnies…of course when the skinnies are leather and the blazer is sequined, you are definitely achieving a dressier vibe…but easy to create none the less.  Hope you find some outfit inspiration.  As always, links to purchase similar items below the first photo.  Happy Wednesday:)

* PS…I finally had to replace my Nicole Miller leather skinnies with the Vince moto ones below…LOVE the fit!  A little higher on the waist, no plumbers cr*ck, and they zipper and button like a jean. They were 1/2 off..still really pricey but I know they will get a TON of wear.  Link to them below the first photo.

Tips for Styling Black on Black

If you follow along with me on Pinterest, you will see a plethora of all black inspiration photos and I have featured the look on the blog before here.  I really adore the slimming effect and with many black garments to choose from, it always makes getting dressed pretty easy.  The trick is making sure to pair up completely different fabrications and textures. For example, my distressed black jeans are denim…and in order to make them NOT appear dingy, I paired them with a cableknit sweater.  The fabrications are totally different…instead of looking non-matched or too worn…it just added some much needed dimension to the look.  To polish it off, I popped a favorite plaid shirt underneath and a red infiniti scarf.  Perfect daytime look for this busy working mama!  In other news…I picked up all of the spring camos yesterday and will be shipping out to those of you who ordered by the end of the week.  Oh, and if you are waiting on the jeans featured below…they should be coming in ANY day now!  I hope everyone is having an awesome week and Happy Wednesday:)
