I am committed to getting healthier in 2013. Partly because it is better for my body and partly to lose those pesky 7 pounds that just will not budge since having Preston. That said, I am all about everything in moderation. I enjoy the occasional Boston Cream or gasp McDonalds cheeseburger far too much to be in constant diet mode. I pinned this drink recipe to one of my boards and knew immediately it was a small change I could see myself sticking to. Starting this week, I replaced my drinks during the day (no more iced tea and soda) with this water recipe. I wasn't a constant sugary drink consumer BUT I rarely drink water...only at the gym. I just find it bland and boring...but this recipe has changed my view....and I have to say it is delicious and refreshing. I added 2 lemons, an entire cucumber and skipped the mint leaves. I have refilled the pitcher once this week using the same lemon/cucumber but will replace after this refill is done. So far, I am doing really well. I am having coffee and orange juice in the morning, but the rest of the day...water! Hopefully my health and my waistline thank me in a few weeks.
I also wanted to ramp up my vitamin situation. I just stopped nursing, quit my prenatal and am on the prowl for a great multi vitamin..suggestions welcome:) One thing I added to the pill popping regiment is Fish Oil. I have read SO much literature on this miracle pill. I did a fair amount of research and have read that this pill helps with attention, brain function, heart health, weightloss and most importantly for me right now, eczema. I purchase this particular blend and brand here and have been really happy so far.
I was watching Dr. Oz the other day and a dermatologist came on to talk about at home remedies for common skin issues...specifically dry cracked feet. My feet aren't cracking thanks to my mild addiction to bimonthly pedicures but they do get very dry..especially the heels...in between pedi's. So I tried what she suggested and it totally works. I covered my feet generously in Vaseline, put on a pair of socks and went to bed. Woke up in the morning with feet softer than my 5 months old behind. I would assume additional treatments would be necessary for extremely dry or cracked feet. I plan to use my pumice stone daily in the shower and then do the Vaseline trick once a week. Should have the best toes in town, no?
The entire family got the Kinect from Santa this year and I have been addicted to the Zumba Rush Game. My workout regiment isn't crazy or anything....I hit a dance class (usually hip hop) one day, kickboxing another and then meet a girlfriend to lift light weights and work on abs. Three days a week is my absolute max...as a busy mom on the go I simply can't find time for any additional days at the gym. That said...I am able to steal away for a half hour here and there at my own house. I have been getting that 4th workout in all month...hoping again to shed those pesky 7 lbs. Connor joins in too...I am working out in his playroom after all. I highly recommend the game- easy to follow along, great music and most importantly, great workout.
So what about you all? Any home remedies or little healthy changes you would like to share? I think I am going to share a few monthly, so if there is anything you do that you LOVE please tell me...as I would love to try it!

Drinking 32 oz. of water a day for 7 days would likely lead to immediate weight loss. I started doing that with a diet a few years ago and lost more than 5 pounds in a week. If you don't drink water regularly your body holds on to whatever it can. If you start drinking it regulary it releases it... Although, you have to keep drinking it. :) I feel so much better too. I can't believe I went 25+ years practically drinking no water! :)
I got a kinect too! I need to get the zumba workout!
Mmm, flavored water is awesome. In the summer I make it with watermelon cubes and fresh rosemary from my herb garden. Your changes are definitely do-able and don't make dieting and working out feel like a chore!
Good for you! I drink water pretty much all day. After having my youngest seven years ago, it was one easy switch for me to help cut calories. Thanks for the details on the Zumba game. Kayla and I were looking into buying this so it's nice to see someone who actually used it and liked it!

We got ourselves a juicer and Ive started juicing again to make sure I'm getting all I should in my diet. I've lost 9llbs in 2weeks and not had 1 headache! Feel so much better already!! Xx
I hate drinking water! Thanks for sharing the flavored water idea. I will have to try it!!
Carly I am sorry to have been absent from your lovely blog for so long - I had a really hectic timing moving, settling and finding a job back in the UK but now thankfully things are all falling into place.
I tend to make my healthy changes in Feb rather than Jan (I just committed to some personal training at the gym eek) but one thing I started taking was immune boosting supplements and I think they are making me less prone to coughs colds and winter bugs. I do think it can be the little things that matter. Hope you are well! Im off to do some catching up now :-)

I'm a water addict! I just don't feel good if I don't get enough. I took up yoga again and forgot how good it feels to stretch my body like that!
Ooooh - gotta love that zumba!
Good luck on all of your goals for a healthier you!
cute blog, by the way (:

My absolute go to is "Hit The Spot Pilates" dvd Denise Austin. I just do two 10 minute ab sessions (Abs & Power Abs) every other day and I notice a difference within weeks. Now a baby question for you as I'm a new mom -- what formula will you use for Preston as I am having issues with my milk supply and might have to use formula and have no idea which one to use? He's a gassy baby as well -- any tips there? Thank you! Hope you can advise. :)
Sorry to add about the Denise Austin dvd -- it's kind of awesome because you can literally squeeze in the 20 minutes of pilates when baby naps..it will tone you up so fast!
I'm feeling pretty awful at the moment too, 3kgs left to loose and also won't budge. I do a similar thing with limes and water in the fridge, it's very refreshing. As for exercise, I need to give myself a god kick up the butt, I need to get back to the gym stat. Meanwhile I'm trying to walk a couple of times a week and playing just dance with the kids!
Thanks for the Denise Austin recommendation:)
As for formula...I used Similac Advance Complete Nutrition(the blue one) without any major issues with my first son ( I didn't breastfeed) Connor. So that is what I am using again.
Preston transitioned really well...I started doing 1/2 and 1/2 for about two weeks...1/2 formula and 1/2 breast- I used my backstock in the freezer..so even if you can't get alot of milk- just start packing away an ounce or two when you can. Then after two weeks passed I started doing mostly formula with one or two oucnes of breast for another week and then I just switched over completely to formula by the 4th week. He had smooth transition, no gas issues or anything.
I think they are either prone to gas or not...Connor was a really gassy baby..Preston not so much- although I do credit it to the breast milk.
I also switched when Connor was really gassy to Dr. Browns bottles and saw a definite change..they are awesome and I have used them for Preston too. best bottles out there for gas.
Hope that helps! Good luck:)

If it makes you feel better, this winter I've been hibernating a lot more than I would like to. So much so that I think I've put on a few pounds as well... Actually it is not think, I know I did. I think you look great, that black lace dress you wore for the Christening looked amazing on you. I think once the weather gets better and you are outside more, those last 7 lbs will melt right off.
Thanks for the baby tips, Carly! :)

i love that vaseline idea!! i'm also making small changes...will try that water, i LOVE cucumber water!
The new year is always such a good time to introduce some healthy habits. I confess, I have fallen by the wayside of gelato these last few weeks, but I said last night post superbowl, time for a change. I like to work in some Jillian Micheals workouts on itunes 1-2 times a week. It's hard to get out to the gyn when winter weather strikes but I have no excuse not to do this at home. Her 30 day shred and leg/butt routine. KILLER.
Maybe I need to try this. I despise water. I love it with lemon, somehow I never thought to mix it all together in a pitcher. I also have this weird thing where I can only drink water out of straw..I know. Good luck, I'll be joining you on the water challenge..maybe!
I keep trying on the water too, but I always come back to diet coke… Last week I went a whole three days… Gah. I was on a kick for a while with mango and ginger slices in the pitcher and then to fancy it up I would put a few frozen cubes of mango in the glass when I poured it. :) (You can buy frozen mango cubes in the freezer section)
You've inspired me to try again!
we are so similar: I drink that water too, take fish oil, use vasiline for EVERYTHING (and have blogged about it), but I'm a yoga gal! ;)
Also look into coconut oil. I use it as lotion after showers (me and the kids), in my hair, for cooking...it's an addiction ;)
